South Korea has invited North Korea to have high level talks next week, to discuss the North’s possible participation in next month’s 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
This comes after the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, suggested in his New Year’s Day speech that the regime was interested in sending a delegation to the event.
Here’s what Seoul’s Unification Minister said:
“”We make an offer to the North to open high-level inter-Korean talks on the 9th of January at the truce village of Panmunjeom. However, we also express that we are ready to hold dialogue at any time or place, and in any format.”
The minister said the invitation will be relayed through communication channels at Panmunjeom, adding that he hopes it can lead to re-establishing the permanent line of communication between the two Koreas, as well as further dialogue on other issues.
If talks do go ahead, it will the first such meeting since December 2015.
